AD and BC

Share it:
AD’ is the shortened form of the Latin words ‘anno domini’ meaning ‘in the year of our Lord’ (Jesus Christ). This is usually written in capital letters. And it should be entered before the numerals. Eg: AD 52 (not 52 AD).
When the date is spelt out in words, it is usual to write , for example, ‘the fifth century AD.’ (not ‘AD the fifth century’) Please note that ‘AD’ is not written with full stops after each of the letters.

BC’ is the shortened form of ‘Before Christ.’ This is usually written in capital letters. And it should be entered after the year. Eg. 120 BC (not BC 120).
When the date is spelt out in words, ‘BC’ should be placed after the same, as ‘the third century BC’ (not ‘BC the third century’).
Please note that ‘BC’ too is not written with full stops after each of the letters.
